World No.5 Sobhy Leads Canadian Women’s Open Draw

14 February 2023

World No.5 Amanda Sobhy will lead the draw for the upcoming Canadian Women’s Open Presented by Slaight Music, PSA World Tour Bronze event, which will take place between March 26-30 at the Allen Lambert Galleria in Brookfield Place, Toronto.

Sobhy, the United States No.1, has already lifted silverware this season at the Oracle NetSuite Open back in September and will look to add to her current tally of 19 PSA titles. The 29-year-old receives a bye into round two where she will face the winner of either tournament wildcard Nikki Todd or England’s Millie Tomlinson.

Egypt’s Salma Hany is the No.2 seed for the event and will be hoping for a return to form as she plots a way back into the world’s top 10. The World No.12 recently reached the semi-finals of the DAC Pro Squash Classic and will look to go even deeper into the Canadian Open, with a second round match against either compatriot Salma Eltayeb or England’s Katie Malliff in store.

USA fill the No.3 and 4 seed positions with the younger Sobhy sister – Sabrina – and Olivia Clyne taking those spots. Clyne in particular has been in excellent form this month, reaching the final of the Cleveland Classic and taking out World No.4 Joelle King in the DAC Pro Classic. Sobhy will take on the winner of Lucy Beecroft and Zeina Zein in round two, whilst Clyne will play either compatriot Marina Stefanoni or Nicole Bunyan.

Canada will be led by their No.1 player Hollie Naughton, who is seeded fifth. The Commonwealth Games silver medalist started the season in great style, reaching the CIB Egyptian Open quarter-finals and then the Oracle NetSuite Open semi-finals. Naughton will be hoping that the Toronto crowd will give her an added boost on home soil.

The other 5/8 seeding positions are taken up by the returning Sivasangari Subramaniam, who will be featuring in only her second event since recovering from the injuries she sustained in a car accident last year. Nada Abbas is looking to recover her ranking and form after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, whilst Wales’ Emily Whitlock will be a dark horse for the title.

The wildcards for the event are former World No.49 Nikki Todd and 19-year-old Niki Shemirani, who claimed the under-19 Canadian Open title in 2021 and now sits at No.289 in the PSA World Rankings.

All of the action from the Canadian Women’s Open will be shown live on SQUASHTV.
