White Oaks Classic RD1: Action Underway In St. Catharines

31 March 2022

The White Oaks Classic, the sole Challenger Tour event on the calendar this week, got underway on Wednesday evening in St. Catharines, Canada, with 16 players aiming for glory at the Challenger 5 level tournament.

There was just a single shock result on the opening day of the competition, as Matthew Lai overcame No.5 seed Harley Lam in straight games in an all-Hong Kong contest. Lai will now face former Canadian No.1 Shawn DeLierre in the last eight of the tournament, after he defeated Pakistan’s Danish Atlas Khan, also in straight games.

There were no problems for the top seeds, as Czech Republic’s Daniel Mekbib and Canada’s Nick Sachvie both won their opening matches at the White Oaks Resort, also in three games.

The quarter finals of the Challenger 5 event will take place at The Club at White Oaks, with eight men trying to make it through to the semi-finals on Thursday, March 31.
