Weekend Round Up: Gordon Enjoys The Goodlife As 3 Tournaments Conclude

15 November 2016

American number two Chris Gordon ended a three-year barren spell as he lived up to his number one seed status at the PSA M10 Ottawa Goodlife Open to take the silverware and secure his first title triumph since winning the 2013 NY Metro Open.

The World No.57 came through a physically and mentally challenging quarter-final encounter with Jamaican Chis Binnie, triumphing in a 72 minute 3-2 battle, before impressing against Peter Creed to secure a straight games win that took him into the decider to face surprise finalist Mike McCue, the Canadian World No.107.

McCue had put together some of the best squash of his career as he recorded back-to-back wins over number three seed Shawn Delierre and number two seed Henrik Mustonen to reach the final but he couldn’t match Gordon on the day as the tall American used his wingspan and reach to take time away from McCue, taking a closely fought first game 11-9.

From then on Gordon controlled the second, taking it 11-6, before losing a tight third 9-11. But the man from New York came back to take another closely contested fourth game 11-9 and secure the title.

“Michael pushed me really hard today,” said Gordon. “I had to work for the win but it was a really enjoyable match.”

While Gordon enjoyed success another top seeded American, Christoper Hanson, failed to meet his seeding at the Tree Brewing M5 event, also taking place in Canada.

Hanson fell to surprise finalist Kyle Finch in the semi-finals as the 17-year-old from Southampton, England, competing in just the 13th event of his career, came through a thrilling five-game battle to steal the win 12-10 in the fifth and set up a title decider with fellow Englishman Adam Murrills, the number two seed.

In the decider it was the youngster though who came good, twice battling back from a game down to open his PSA World Tour tally with an impressive tournament win.

With Finch sealing the win for England there was also joy for Scottish squash as Douglas Kempsell took the spoils at the Niort Venise Verte Open, ensuring some sporting success for Scotland on a weekend that saw their national football side suffer a heavy defeat to England.

Number six seeded Kempsell beat top seeded Christophe Andre in an impressive 3-0 win in the quarter-finals before then defeating number three seed Baptiste Masotti in the title-decider to lift the trophy – just the fourth of his career to date.
