Torneo Profesional Mexicano de Squash: Avila Takes Title On Home Soil

22 August 2022

Mexico’s Alfredo Avila was victorious on Sunday at the Torneo Profesional Mexicano de Squash, winning on home soil once again, and claiming the 16th Tour title of his career, and doing so without dropping a game over the course of his week in Ciudad de Mexico.

The 31-year-old started his campaign on the opening day with a confident performance to defeat compatriot Carlos Vargas, dropping just 13 points across his straight-game victory, one which lasted 33 minutes.

Avila then got the better of another fellow Mexican, in No.5 seed Alejandro Reyes, winning in straight games again, before then downing Guatemala’s Alejandro Enriquez. He defeated the Guatemalan in three games as well, to advance through to yet another final.

The final saw the Mexican come up against the tournament’s top seed, Arturo Salazar, who Avila had lost out to in finals in Houston and Johns Creek in July. It was the No.2 seed who took the first game 11-5, and early on in the second game, Salazar was forced to retire from the contest, gifting Avila his 16th Tour title.
