Top Seeds Into Semis At Canadian Senior Championships

The top four seeds in both draws are through to the semi-finals of the Oxford Properties Canadian Senior Championships presented by Slaight Music at the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto.

The closest contest of the evening’s action came between No.3 seed Nicole Bunyan and the unseeded Samantha Cornett, the former Canadian No.1. The pair went the distance, with Bunyan narrowly holding off the four-time Canadian Nationals champion to win 11-9 in the fifth.

“That was a really big mental battle for me because I look up to Sam greatly. She’s always been an excellent mentor to me and still is, so every point I had to try to forget I was playing her. I had to be out there to compete because I knew Sam was going to bring her best no matter what,” Bunyan said after her victory.

Bunyan will now face No.2 seed Danielle Letourneau in the semi-finals after the World No.19 defeated the tournament’s No.6 seed Hannah Blatt in straight games. The other semi-final will see World No.17 Hollie Naughton take on No.4 seed Nikki Todd, after the pair both won their last eight matches 3-0.

Just a single game by the top four seeds in the men’s quarter-finals, with No.4 seed Nick Sachvie having to withstand a fightback from wildcard George Crowne in his last eight contest. Crowne took the second game to level the match, but Sachvie then restricted the wildcard to just two points across the final two games, winning out 11-9, 10-12, 11-1, 11-1 to advance to the last four.

He will face top seed, and Canadian No.1, David Baillargeon in the semi-finals, after the World No.74 downed Cameron Seth in straight games. The other contest in the last four will see No.2 seed Shawn DeLeirre take on No.3 seed Michael McCue for a place in the final on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.
