Tantalising Ties in Store at Tasmanian Open

24 July 2015

#PSAWorldTour

The City of Devenport Tasmanian Open, PSA M5 & W5 tournaments begin on Friday July 24 with a number of intense clashes set to excite spectators.

World No.71 Jaymie Haycocks heads the draw in the Men’s event as he steps up his search for a first PSA World Tour title since 2013.

Haycocks has achieved two quarter-final finishes so far in 2015 and, as the number one seed, is ideally placed to add to the two PSA World Tour titles that he has picked up in his career to date.

He will face fellow Englishman Lewis Doughty in round one, with the latter hoping that he can spring an upset despite the 157 places between the pair in the World Rankings.

Robert Downer is yet to claim a PSA World Tour crown in his burgeoning career but knows that could change if he plays to the best of his ability.

The 23-year-old has made it to the semi-final stage at two of the last three events that he has participated in and faces Ondrej Uherka to kickstart his tournament.

Talented teenager Kush Kumar is among the forerunners for the event and is more than capable of troubling his higher-ranked opponents.

After reaching the quarter-final on his only PSA World Tour appearance of 2015 at the Life Time Fitness Vegas Open, Kumar will be looking to make a big splash this time out. The Indian National Championship semifinalist is matched up with Muhammad Waheed for a place in the second round.

The Women’s event sees Christine Nunn take the favourite tag on home-soil as she looks to fight for her third career title.

Two semi-final finishes and a runner-up position so far in 2015 shows that Nunn is a battle-hardened competitor and she has received a bye to the quarter-final.

Nunn’s compatriot, Sarah Cardwell, will also be vying for the crown after a number of high finishes this year.

Her most recent outing saw her reach the quarter-final of the Invercargill Licensing Trust NZ Southern Open and her bye to the same stage in this event will enable to her to begin her preparation for the latter stages.
