SRAM PSA 5: Yuen and Azman Victorious

1 October 2021

Top seeds Ivan Yuen and Aifa Azman have taken the spoils at the SRAM PSA 5, with the pair victorious in their respective finals on Friday afternoon in Kuala Lumpur.

The Challenger 10 level tournament was held with domestic entry restrictions, allowing those based in Malaysia to participate, with Yuen and Azman being the highest-ranked players in the draw.

Yuen came into the men’s event as the only player inside the top 100 in the World Rankings, but although he was the favourite to take home the title, it was made hard for him.

He defeated Muhammad Fayyad Hashim and No.7 seed Hafiz Zhafri in straight games, before then playing for 78 minutes in his semi-final against No.3 seed Ong Sai Hung, eventually winning 3-2.

He then went the distance in the final as well, against No.2 seed Darren Rahul Pragasam. After going 2-1 down, Yuen fought back to win the final two games and take a 3-2 victory to claim his second title of the year.

Azman, on the other hand, dropped just a single game as she came through the women’s event relatively unscathed. She started with comfortable wins over Vitrikashenie Kulasegaran and No.5 seed, Aika Azman, before then getting the better of No.6 seed Ainaa Amani in the semis.

The 19-year-old then faced No.3 seed Chan Yiwen in the final, and winning a third game tie-break 15-13, she took the momentum back in the contest. She went on to win it 3-1 to secure her second title in 2021.
