SquashLevels Power Ratings: Chinappa, Mohamed & Tinne Gilis All Jump Up 10

The highest-placed of those three players to make a double-digit move on the SquashLevels Power Ratings this week is Belgium’s Tinne Gilis, who makes the move up to the #11 spot following a run to the third round in Giza.

That run started with a comfortable 20-minute victory over Australia’s Sarah Cardwell, before the Belgian knocked out Welsh No.1, and PSA World No.9, Tesni Evans, in a convincing straight games performance in the second round of the Platinum tournament.

Although she bowed out at the last 16 stage to World No.6 Hania El Hammamy, she took a game off the most in-form player in the sport, and made the Egyptian spend nearly an hour on court to book her place in the quarter-finals.

Gilis saw her level rise by an incredible 10{d0587469e8933ea5fce14b556fa40d44c2813bf7740605b59885b5a8c24d5885}, and she is now just a place behind older sister Nele in the SquashLevels Power Ratings following the CIB Egyptian Open. The Belgian squash game is strong right now!

Going on step further in the tournament was India’s Joshna Chinappa, as the PSA World No.11 made her way through to the quarter-finals of a Platinum event for the first time since the El Gouna International in 2018, two and a half years ago.

The Indian No.1 was appearing for the first time since the restart of the PSA World Tour after the enforced suspension due to COVID-19, and the break did her good. She got the better of Scotland’s Lisa Aitken in her first match in convincing style.

Chinappa needed all five games to get through her last 16 clash against Farida Mohamed, before coming up against the imperious Nour El Sherbini in the quarter-finals.

Despite a straight games defeat against the four-time World Champion, the Indian No.1 has risen ten spots on the SquashLevels Power Ratings following the event in Giza, and is now at #23.

For the second straight Platinum event, PSA World No.38 Farida Mohamed made it through to the last 16. Having done so at the CIB Black Ball Women’s Squash Open prior to the enforced suspension of the tour, she backed it up with another third round appearance, this time at the CIB Egyptian Open.

Like several others on the tour, Giza was her first showing since the lockdown, and the young Egyptian came out of the traps firing, by defeating Swiss No.1 Cindy Merlo in 25-minutes, but it got even better in the second round.

In her first ever match-up with World No.5 Sarah-Jane Perry, Mohamed downed the Englishwoman in straight games, securing one of the biggest victories of her fledgling career to date, putting her through to the third round of a second straight major.

She was unable to go any further in the event, but thanks to a 3-2 defeat to Joshna Chinappa, Mohamed’s level increased further on the SquashLevels Power Ratings. Her level improved by 6.5{d0587469e8933ea5fce14b556fa40d44c2813bf7740605b59885b5a8c24d5885} across the tournament, and she made the jump to #26 in the standings.

Along with the trio who jumped up ten places, England’s Lucy Turmel and Canada’s Danielle Letourneau saw big improvements on their position on the SquashLevels Power Ratings, both rising seven spots, with Turmel having the highest individual percentage improvement of her level, seeing it increase by 10.6{d0587469e8933ea5fce14b556fa40d44c2813bf7740605b59885b5a8c24d5885}.

There are no newcomers into the women’s top eight following the CIB Egyptian Open, with just a single positional swap. After that surprise second round defeat to Mohamed, Sarah-Jane Perry drops down to #8, with New Zealand’s Joelle King swapping with her to take the #7 spot.

At the top, Nour El Sherbini extends her gap thanks to winning in front of the Pyramids for a second straight year following her PSA Women’s World Championship victory there in 2019.

The ‘Warrior Princess’ saw her level improve by 4{d0587469e8933ea5fce14b556fa40d44c2813bf7740605b59885b5a8c24d5885} across the tournament, with Nour El Tayeb, who sits at the #2 spot, being the only other member of the top eight to see their level increase as a result of their performances in Giza.
