Sportwerk Women’s Open: Gear Secures Incredible Victory

12 December 2021

England’s Grace Gear continued her great form with an incredible victory at the Sportwerk Women’s Open, as she knocked out four higher-ranked seeded players to win her second crown of the year.

The Challenger 10 level tournament was held with regional restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and Gear came into the event unseeded, and had to start in the opening round of the competition.

After beating Frenchwoman Ninon Lemarchand and No.6 seed Cristina Gomez in the opening two rounds, Gear moved on to beat No.3 seed Ineta Mackevica in the quarter finals.

She then had to fight her way past compatriot Lily Taylor in the semi-finals, with the pair battling it out for almost an hour in an epic five-game contest, which saw Gear lose the first game on a tie-break, before coming back into the match.

The Englishwoman would then go to five in the final as well, and she found herself two games down to Scotland’s Georgia Adderley, who already had four titles to her name in 2021.

However, Gear was able to fight back once again, winning both the third and fourth games by an 11-9 scoreline to send the match into a decider. She went on to take it, keeping the momentum, to claim her second crown of the year.
