Schraglage Squash Open Day 2: Busy Day Sees Quarter Finals Set

23 July 2022

The second day of the Schraglage Squash Open powered by VASS saw 16 matches take place at the Pink Power club in Boblingen, Germany, as the quarter final line-ups in both draws were set.

After several surprise results on the opening day of the men’s Challenger 5 tournament, there was just the one upset on the second day, as Wales’s World No.163 Elliott Morris Devred downed the competition’s No.7 seed, Belgium’ Joeri Hapers.

Devred sits 30 spots below the Belgian No.1 in the World Rankings, and he dropped the first game of their second round encounter in Boblingen. However, the Welshman fought back to win both of the next two games by an 11-8 scoreline, before going on to win the match in four, claiming the fourth game on a tie-break 14-12. He will now face top seed Yassin Elshafei in the last eight, after the Egyptian downed compatriot Abdelrahman Nassar, also in four games.

Elsewhere in the men’s event, the battle between the two unseeded players saw Egypt’s Ziad Ibrahim defeat Iran’s Sepehr Etemadpoor in a five-game battle which lasted almost an hour. Ibrahim, the World No.227, fought back after losing the first game to hold a 2-1 lead, but saw the Iranian then take the fourth game 11-3. He regrouped, though, to win the fifth 11-7, to book his place in the quarters where he will face No.6 seed Viktor Byrtus of the Czech Republic.

The other two quarter finals will feature four more nationalities. Germany’s Valentin Rapp continues his run on home soil, and the No.3 seed will take on Austrian No.1 Aqeel Rehman, while No.4 seed Robin Gadola will do battle with England’s No.8 seed Stuart MacGregor on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s Challenger 3 level competition also got underway on Friday, with the top eight seeds all comfortably making it through to the last eight of the tournament. Only England’s Polly Clark and Austrian No.1 Jacqueline Peychar dropped a game, with the latter fighting back after going a game down to win 3-1 in her opening round contest.

Top seed Nadia Pfister will take on one of two German hopes in the draw in the quarter finals, in No.5 seed Katerina Tycova, while No.2 seed Saskia Beinhard will face Peychar in her quarter final contest. Clark will meet fellow Englishwoman Alicia Mead, while Katie Wells and Spain’s Sofia Mateos will do battle on Saturday.

The quarter finals of the Schraglage Squash Open powered by VASS will take place on Saturday, July 23, with all the action from the Pink Power club in Boblingen, Germany, being streamed live on the PSA Challenger Tour’s YouTube channel. You can also keep up to date with live scores from the tournament on the PSA World Tour website.
