Santiago Open: Lopez Takes First Win In Three Years

10 February 2022

Spain’s Edmon Lopez was the victor at the Santiago Open, winning on home soil to claim his first Tour title in three years, after lasting tasting success at the Springfield Scottish Squash Open in 2019.

The Spaniard, who has been inside the world’s top 50 previously, was down at World No.166 prior to the start of this Challenger 5 level event, due to playing just two events since the Tour was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He came into the domestically restricted tournament as the No.4 seed, and he started with a straight games victory against Pablo Quintana Estevez, before also winning 3-0 against Pablo Dolz in the quarter finals.

Lopez’s good form continued in to the semi-finals, as he downed top seed Ivan Perez in straight games to move through to the final, where he got the better of No.3 seed Sergio Garcia Pollan.

The Spaniard came through the entire event without dropping a game, en route to his eighth Tour title, and his second on home soil in Spain.
