Rochester ProAm RD1: Wildcard Trio Through To Last 16

The first day of the Rochester ProAm threw up some surprise results, with three of the tournament’s wildcards making their way into the second round of the Challenger 5 level tournament.

The Indian duo of Veer Chotrani and Yash Fadte, along with Mexico’s Mario Yanez, all made the most of their wildcard status in the competition, winning their opening matches of the week in straight games. The Mexican came up against Egypt’s Karim Elbarbary, but the former World No.77 faced no issues, winning 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 to set up a meeting with Germany’s No.8 seed Tobias Weggen.

Chotrani was first on to court on the opening day of the competition, and he faced Canada’s Cory McCartney for a place in the last 16. The Indian was in control throughout, dropping just 12 points across the three games, with the World No.471 advancing to the second round, where he will face Mexico’s Miled Zarazua, the No.4 seed for the event.

The third wildcard to make it through on the opening day was another Indian, in Yash Fadte, after he got the better of England’s Lewis Doughty in straight games. Despite sitting more than 500 places below the Englishman in the World Rankings, Fadte won in three to book his last 16 spot, where he has the task of facing No.2 seed Aly Hussein.

Elsewhere, Colombian Andres Villamizar had to fight doggedly to come through his opening match, beating Egypt’s Mohamed Nabil in a fifth game decider, while Muhammad Farhan Hashmi overcame Muhammad Ibrahim Noorani in the all-Pakistani clash on day one.

The Rochester ProAm will continue on Thursday, April 7, with. The seeded players coming into the draw for the second round of the competition, as the last 16 battle it out for places in the quarter finals.
