Qualico Manitoba Open RD2: Douglas and Taylor Cause Shocks

The second round of the Qualico Manitoba Open saw a couple of surprise results, as both USA’s Andrew Douglas and Welshman Owain Taylor took out seeded opposition to make it into the last eight of the Challenger 10 level competition.

Taylor came up against Czech No.1, and the tournament’s No.5 seed, Martin Svec in the second round of the event, and he spent just 46 minutes on court, coming through that contest in four games to cause the biggest upset of the day’s play.

The Welshman started well, and after taking the first game 11-9, he carried that momentum through the second, dropping just four points as he doubled his advantage in the clash. Svec then pulled one back, but Taylor regrouped to take the fourth game and secure the victory.

He will now face Andrew Douglas, to guarantee an unseeded player in the last four of the competition. The American downed No.7 seed Joseph White in his second round match in Winnipeg, overcoming the challenge from the Australian in four games.

Elsewhere, it was plain sailing for both of the top two seeds, as USA’s Spencer Lovejoy and England’s Nick Wall both came through their opening matches of the tournament to advance into the quarter finals.

The quarter finals of the Qualico Manitoba Open will be held on Friday, April 22 at the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club, with the last eight going head-to-head for places in the semis.
