PSA Anyospark QF: Romiglio Overcomes Malik To Advance

4 June 2022

The quarter finals of the PSA Anyospark saw four lengthy matches, with Argentina’s Leandro Romiglio causing the sole upset of the day, as he came from behind to defeat England’s No.3 seed Curtis Malik to make it through to the semi-finals.

The Argentinian, who featured at the PSA World Championships for the first time earlier this year, found himself two games down to the Englishman, including having lost the first game on a tie-break 13-11. However, Romiglio fought back to win the third game by the same scoreline before going on to win both the fourth and fifth games as well to secure a 3-2 victory to make the last four of the competition.

Romiglio will now face Spaniard Ivan Perez in the semi-finals, after the tournament’s No.2 seed overcame compatriot Sergio Garcia Pollan in the longest match of the day. Pollan took the first on a tie-break, before Perez, the World No.104, took the second 11-4 to level it up. He then won thee third on a tie-break, to keep the momentum in his favour, eventually winning in four games after 82 minutes of action.
