Men’s Worlds Semi Finals: The Stats & How to Watch

The semi finals of the Men’s World Championship take place today, with action beginning at 17:00 (GMT) at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex as the final four go head-to-head.

There will be a new name on the trophy this year, but which one of the four contenders will it be. The first semi final sees World No.3 Tarek Momen take on European No.1 Simon Rösner.

The second match of the evening will see World No.5 Paul Coll battle it out with World No.10 Marwan ElShorbagy, who got the better of his brother Mohamed in the last eight.

The first match of the evening sees ‘The Viper’ take on the ‘German Tree-Chopper’ as World No.3 Tarek Momen takes on World No.6 Simon Rösner.

The pair have a very tight head-to-head record, with the Egyptian just edging it with a 6-5 advantage from their previous 11 clashes. However, Momen has won the last three, and you have to go back to February 2018 for the last time the German took the win.

‘The Viper’ has not been at his best this week, but has found a way to win, like all good champions do…? Although he defeated both Mazen Hesham and Diego Elias in straight games, he had to fight hard to come from behind to beat the home favourite Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi in the last 16.

Rösner, on the other hand, has been playing some of the best squash of his career, and is yet to go behind in the tournament, dropping only two games. He has overcome the British pair of Joel Makin and James Willstrop in his last two matches, and in some style as well.

Will it be Momen who makes it through to the World Championship final, for a second time in 2019? Or can Rösner go one better than he did in Chicago and make it to the final for the first time in his career?

The second semi-final sees New Zealand’s Paul Coll featuring in the last four of the World Championships for the first time, where he will face 2017 runner-up Marwan ElShorbagy.

The pair have only met twice before on the PSA World Tour, with the Egyptian having won both of those, including a first round clash on this very court, at the Qatar Classic back in 2017.

Coll has become the first New Zealander to reach the semi finals of the sport’s premiere tournament since 1988, and for three of his four matches he has cruised to victory, beating Hamad Al-Amri, Borjan Golan and Zahed Salem, all in under 50 minutes. However, his third round clash with Omar Mosaad took nearly two hours, but he was able to come through to win 3-2 in a fifth game tie-break.

ElShorbagy, on the other hand, has spent over an hour less on court, thanks to quick wins against Arturo Salazar, Nicolas Mueller and Mohamed Abouelghar. ‘The Jackal’ had to overcome his older brother in the quarter final, winning 3-2 in the final match of Wednesday’s play.

Will Marwan make his move into the final for a second time? Or can ‘Superman’ fly through to a first World Championship final?
