JK Windsor Open: Moya Shocks Khan To Reach Second Round

The JK Windsor Open got underway in Ontario, Canada on Thursday afternoon, and there was just the lone surprise result on the opening day, with Ecuador’s Maria Moya getting the better of No.4 seed Arisha Khan to advance to the quarter finals.

Moya came into the Challenger 5 level competition in Canada as one of the eight unseeded players, and she took on Khan in her opening match of the competition. Despite ranking more than 50 laces below the American, Moya won in straight games, dropping just 14 points across their contest, to move through to the last eight where she will now face one of three Canadians through to the quarters, in Sara Khan.

The other two Canadians, in top seed Nikki Todd and No.6 seed Amal Izhar, will meet in the last eight of the tournament, after their both came through their opening matches in Ontario in straight games. Japan’s Erisa Sano Herring and Colombian Laura Tovar will meet in the other quarter final clash in the top half of the draw.

The quarter finals will see an all-Mexican affair between Diana Garcia and Diana Gasca on Friday afternoon, after the latter had to hold off a hard charging Man Shaheen, who had come back from two games down to send their match into a deciding game. However, Gasca regrouped to win in five and she will now face her compatriot on Friday.

The quarter finals of the JK Windsor Open will take place at the Devonshire Mall in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on Friday, August 19, with the last eight doing battle for places in the semi-finals of the Challenger 5 level competition.
