JK Windsor Open: Garcia Downs Todd To Claim Title

22 August 2022

Mexico’s Diana Garcia claimed the second Tour title of her career on Sunday afternoon, after she got the better of Canadian Nikki Todd in the final of the JK Windsor Open at the Devonshire Mall in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Garcia came into the tournament as the No.2 seed, but she was actually the highest ranked player in the draw, and she started her campaign for the week against Canada’s Catherine Giachino, winning in straight games, and dropping just ten points in the contest.

She came through her quarter final contest with compatriot and No.7 seed Diana Gasca in four games, before then getting the better of the tournament’s surprise package, unseeded Ecuadorian Maria Moya, also in four games.

The final saw Garcia take on Todd, with the pair meeting for the sixth time on Tour. The Mexican came in with just the one win in their previous five meetings, but that came in the final of the Copa Produbanco – PSA Quito-Arrayanes Squash Open back in 2019, when Garcia claimed her maiden Tour title.

The first game of the final on Sunday afternoon was a tight one, going deep into a tie-break, and it was the 29-year-old Mexican that took it 15-13. That was crucial moving forward in the final, as she took that momentum and maintained it throughout, to win in three games, and to claim her second victory on Tour.
