Argentinian qualifier Gonzalo Miranda caused a huge shock in the opening round of the Decker Camiones & Canal 10 MDP TV Tour de las Americas – Mar del Plata Open, PSA M5 tournament after stunning second seed Andres Herrera to reach the quarter-final of a PSA World Tour event for the first time since 2014.

After edging the opening game, World No.451 Miranda stormed into a commanding 7-1 lead in the second and resisted an attempted fightback from Herrera to double his lead. The 27-year-old was highly consistent in the third and final game and rattled off a number of devastating drops and drives to complete a sublime 11-9, 11-5, 11-2 victory over an opponent ranked 314 places above him in the World Rankings.

He will go up against compatriot Robertino Pezzota in the quarter-final, with Pezzota also vanquishing a Colombian, Dairo Sandoval, in straight games.

Number one seed Leandro Romiglio joins his fellow Argentines in the last eight after seeing off wildcard Juan Pablo Roude 3-0. Romiglio injected plenty of pace into proceedings as a flurry of attacking shots gave Roude very little time on the ball. Romiglio is on a hot streak of form after lifting a second PSA World Tour title last month at the Assore Central Gauteng Open, and will play Bryan Cueto next, who defeated Erick Herrera in five games.

Brazil’s Diego Gobbi overcame his first round opponent relatively comfortably after powering to a win in three against Federico Cioffi. The World No.197 dropped just four points across games one and two, and fended off a late resurgence from Cioffi to record the victory. Mexico’s Edgar Zayas will be his quarter-final opponent after he saw off Daniel Alejandro Lomaglio.

Santiago Orozco Parra was the only Colombian not to fall by the wayside as he came through a gargantuan encounter with fourth seed Stuart Hadden to reach the next round. The 18-year-old went 2-1 down, losing the second game 18-16 along the way, but recovered magnificently to force through the win and set up a last eight fixture with Juan Gomez Dominguez, who conquered Matias Valenzuela.
