Greater Bendigo QF: Ling and Heo Cause Upsets To Reach Semis

The quarter finals of the City of Greater Bendigo International threw up two surprises, with one of those being a major upset, as South Korean Mingyeong Heo got the better of women’s top seed Sarah Cardwell to make the last four of the competition.

Heo took on Cardwell for the first time on Tour, and after two games, the pair were level, following the Australian’s success in the second to pull herself back into the contest. The South Korean then took the third comfortably, before the fourth went through to a tie-break, one that Heo took 15-13, to book her place in the semi-finals, where she will face Hong Kong’s No.3 seed Wai Sze Wing.

The other women’s semi-final will see No.2 seed Akari Midorikawa of Japan, who now becomes the de facto favourite for the crown. She will now take on Hong Kong’s Lam Po Ying, after the pair came through their respective quarter finals in Victoria.

Hong Kong’s Andes Ling caused the only upset in the men’s event, as he joined the top three seeds in making it into the last four. He defeated No.8 seed Ho Ka Hei in a five-game battle which lasted just shy of the hour mark, and will now face top seed Joseph White in the semis. The other men’s match on Saturday will see No.2 seed Rhys Dowling and No.3 seed Bryan Lim Tze King face off, after the pair both won their respective quarter finals in five games.

The semi-finals of the City of Greater Bendigo International will take place on Saturday, July 2, with the last four in both draws going head-to-head for their places in the finals on Sunday.
