Gibraltar Open: Tournament Preview

The sole event on European soil this week will come from the Europa Sports Centre in Europa Point, with the Challenger 5 level Gibraltar Open taking place from Wednesday, July 13 to Saturday, July 16.

The women’s draw will be led by Scotland’s Alison Thomson, with the World No.76 aiming to retain the title she won on the island in October. She defeated Spain’s Marta Dominguez Fernandez in the final in 2021, with the Spaniard also back, this time as the No.3 seed for the competition.

Egypt’s Nadeen Kotb and Rana Ismail, along with the English quartet of Saran Nghiem, Katie Wells, Kiera Marshall and Asia Harris making up the rest of the top eight seeds for the women’s competition.

England’s Tom Walsh will be the top seed in the men’s event, with Spain’s Ivan Perez, last year’s runner-up in Gibraltar, as the No.2 seed for the competition. His compatriot Edmon Lopez will be the No.3 seed, with 2018 Gibraltar Open victor, Austria’s Aqeel Rehman, making up the rest of the top four seeds in the men’s event.

England’s Ben Smith and Stuart MacGregor, along with Belgium’s Joeri Hapers and Welshman Elliott Morris Devred, will also be seeded for the tournament, while Englishman James Peach, the victor at the Austrian Open on Saturday afternoon in Salzburg, will be unseeded for the event, and one to watch in the opening round.
