Finch Shocks Tuomi in Charing Cross Classic

Wildcard Kyle Finch came up with a superlative performance to stun number four seed Matias Tuomi with a 3-0 victory in the first round of the LOC Charing Cross Classic, PSA M5 tournament.

The 16-year-old, who reached the semi-final of the Belfast Open in August at his first PSA World Tour event, was clinical throughout the encounter and scythed through his more experienced opponent with an 11-7, 11-3, 11-5 victory.

World No.296 Finch, who is ranked 163 places below Tuomi, will face Israel’s Daniel Poleshchuk in the quarter-final after he just managed to edge a tight match against Ben Ford to reach the next round.

Qualifier Chris Hall caused another of the day’s big upsets with an assured win over sixth seed Benjamin Fischer. The 28-year-old downed his opponent in straight games to set up a quarter-final clash with number two seed Geoffrey Demont who defeated fellow Frenchman Baptiste Masotti.

Meanwhile, Hall’s fellow qualifier, the talented Patrick Rooney, came through a testing fixture with Michael Harris and will face Australia’s Matthew Hopkin for a place in the semi-final after he beat Rui Soares.

Top seed James Earles and World No.138 Lyell Fuller will contest the other quarter-final tie after they scored triumphs over Steven London and Jamie Henderson, respectively.
