ElShorbagy Brothers Take Top Honours As Egyptians Dominate PSA Awards

ElShorbagy brother Mohamed and Marwan, the World No.1 and No.7 respectively, took top honours during the 2015/16 PSA Awards as they took home the PSA Men’s Player and PSA Men’s Young Player of the Year awards during a dinner held following the conclusion of the PSA Dubai World Series Finals.

After a season that saw him claim six PSA World Series titles from a possible seven – as part of a total haul of eight titles – Mohamed was crowned Player of the Year by the PSA Awards Committee, a group consisting of selected influential former players, members of the media, tournament promoters and PSA Board representatives.

Mohamed’s younger brother Marwan, the 22-year-old, collected the Young Player of the Year award after a breakthrough season that saw him break into the top ten for the first time and win the Grasshopper Cup and Houston Open.

There was Egyptian success in the Women’s Tour as well as Nour El Sherbini, the 20-year-old who became the first Egyptian British Open winner and World Championship winner this season, was named Women’s Player of the Year while 18-year-old Nouran Gohar, the British Open runner-up and firmly established top eight player, collected the Women’s Young Player of the Year award.

There was double success for El Sherbini on the night as she also collected the Fan’s Women’s Player of the Year award, while Ali Farag, the 24-year-old who graduated from Harvard last summer, was nominated as the Fan’s Male Player of the Year.

Farag also collected the Male Spirit of Squash Award – chosen by his fellow players as a player who best demonstrated sportsmanship like behaviour throughout the season both on and off court – with eight-time World Champion Nicol David collecting the women’s award.

The final awards of the evening went to Ramy Ashour, winner of Shot of the Season, while James Willstrop’s battle with Mohamed ElShorbagy during the 2015 World Championship was announced as the Match of the Season – as chosen by fans on social media.
