Egyptian Challenger Tour #2: Tournament Preview

Following the success of the first event on the Egyptian Challenger Tour last month, the #2 event takes place this week at the Cairo International Stadium, the same venue as last month’s event.

Once again, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this tournament is restricted to only those currently living in Egypt, with just a single non-Egyptian on both sides of the event, in Iraq’s Mohamed Ferman Hassan and Mexico’s Diana Garcia.

After winning last time in Cairo, Moustafa El Sirty will once again be the top seed in the men’s draw, and he is seeded to meet Yahya Elnawasany in the final once again, having gotten the better of his compatriot at this venue in March.

They are the only two inside the top 100 in the World Rankings who will feature in the men’s event, with the likes of Ahmed Hosny, Omar ElKattan, Khaled Labib, Marwan Tarek and Hazem Helmy all inside the top 200, and aiming to cause some shocks later on in the event. Iraq’s World No.375 Mohamed Ferman Hassan will be unseeded for the tournament.

After an unbelievable run to the final in last month’s #1 event, where she won on her very first outing on Tour, 15-year-old Fayrouz Aboelkheir will be aiming to continue an incredible start to her career.

She will be a wildcard for this tournament, and will take on No.15 seed Nadeen Kotb in the first round on Thursday. The top seed for the women’s event will be World No.55 Jana Shiha, with five other players from the top 100 at the top of the draw list.

Mexican No.1 Diana Garcia will be the No.4 seed for the tournament, while Sana Ibrahim, Hana Moataz, Salma Eltayeb and Nour Aboulmakarim will all be in action on home soil.
