CIB Egyptian Tour 5: Abbas and El Sirty Victorious

5 December 2021

The Egyptian duo of Nada Abbas and Moustafa El Sirty took the tiles at the CIB Egyptian Challenger Tour 5 in Alexandria this week, with the former securing her first win since 2016, while El Sirty continued his dominance of the Challenger Tour.

Abbas last tasted success at the London Open five years ago, when she defeated Julianne Courtice in the final, and she came into this Challenger 20 level tournament as the No.3 seed, receiving a bye through to the second round.

She then defeated Haya Ali in four games, before taking down No.5 seed Zeina Mickawy in the quarter finals, after coming from behind to win 3-1, and move through to the last four.

It was in the semi-finals that she caused an upset, downing World No.18, and the competition’s No.2 seed, Canada’s Danielle Letourneau, in a four-game battle to make it into the final at the Smouha Sporting Club.

The young Egyptian took on compatriot Hana Ramadan in the final, with her opponent having taken out the top seed en route. However, it would be Abbas that secured her first win in five years, claiming the victory with a 13-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5 win in 48 minutes.

In the men’s event, Moustafa El Sirty, now at his highest ever position of World No.38 in the rankings, continued his incredible form in 2021, to claim a Tour-leading ninth victory of the year.

He came in as the No.7 seed, moving straight through to the second round thanks to an opening day bye, before getting the better of Abdallah Elmasry to advance to the quarter finals.

In the last eight, he took down the tournament’s top seed, Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez, after a lengthy 79-minute, four-game duel, in which El Sirty took the fourth game on a tie-break 15-13.

The Egyptian then got the better of compatriot Shehab Essam in the semis, to set up a final with No.4 seed Zahed Salem. El Sirty took the first game on a tie-break, but quickly found himself 2-1 down. However, in the early part of the fourth game, Salem had to retire, giving El Sirty his ninth crown of an incredible year.
