Challenger Tour Weekly Preview: Three Events Start Busy Period

The Challenger Tour will be very busy over the next few weeks, with no fewer than 13 events scheduled for the rest of the month. Three of those begins this week, and in three different countries.

There are tournaments in Egypt, England and Mexico this week, with all three having some form of restrictions on entries due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Torneo Profesional Mexicano de Squash
The first event of the week will take place in Mexico City, with the Torneo Profesional Mexicano de Squash beginning on Thursday 12, and running through to Monday 16 August.

The Challenger 5 level tournament, which will be held at Pro Squash Polanco, has regional restrictions. Players from North, Central and South America have been permitted to enter the tournament.

Home favourite Alfredo Avila, the World No.62, will be the top seed for the tournament, with Canada’s David Baillargeon as his nearest competitor. Players from Brazil, England and Guatemala are also in the draw.

Cheam Squash Squared Classic
One of two events to start on Saturday is the Cheam Squash Squared Classic, which will take place at Cheam Squash Club over the course of Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 August.

The Challenger 3 level event is a domestic event, and only open to those currently living in the United Kingdom, de to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, two African nations will be represented.

South Africa’s Gareth Naidoo and Zimbabwean Tayne Turnock will be in action in Cheam this week. Meanwhile, Welshman Peter Creed will be the top seed for the tournament, with Curtis Malik, Tom Walsh and Stuart MacGregor as his nearest challengers.

CIB Egyptian Challenger Tour 2
The Challenger Tour returns to Cairo this weekend, with the second instalment of the CIB Egyptian Challenger Tour taking place, this time at the Wadi Degla Club in. Maadi.

The Challenger 5 level tournament will feature both men’s and women’s events, with the usual contenders. Salma Eltayeb will be the top seed in the women’s draw, with the likes of Nour Aboulmakarim, Kenzy Ayman and Fayrouz Aboelkheir as her nearest competitors.

Moustafa El Sirty and Yahya Elnawasany will be the top two seeds for the men’s draw once again, while Ahmed Hosny, Omar ElKattan and Aly Abou Eleinen will all be aiming for glory.
