Central Open Whanganui Day 2: Chileshe and Williams To Meet In Final

17 June 2022

The second day of the Central Open PSA – Whanganui was a busy one, with both the quarter finals and semi-finals taking place at the Whanganui Squash Club in New Zealand, with Lwamba Chileshe and Evan Williams making it through to the final of the competition.

There was just a single surprise in the quarter finals, with No.6 seed Zac Millar overcoming the challenge of compatriot and No.4 seed William Donnelly, winning in straight games to make it through to the last four. That including a third game tie-break win, 13-11, to secure the victory in 25 minutes.

He was joined in the semis by the Chileshe brothers and No.3 seed Evan Williams, with the latter coming through a five-game battle with Chris van der Salm, coming from behind after losing the opening game of the contest to make it through to the last four.

Williams then went through another five-gamer in the semis to down No.2 seed Temwa Chileshe. The Kiwi led twice in the match, but saw Chileshe fight back to level the contest on both occasions. However, Williams was able to regroup once again, winning the fifth to advance to the final, where he will face the older Chileshe, in top seed Lwamba, after he defeated Zac Millar in straight games.

The final of the Central Open PSA – Whanganui will take place on Saturday, June 18, with Lwamba Chileshe and Evan Williams doing battle for the Challenger 5 level title.
