Carol Weymuller Open preview: Elaraby seeks title No.7 in New York

19 April 2022

Egypt’s World No.8 Rowan Elaraby will be looking to add another title to her collection as she tops the draw for the upcoming Carol Weymuller Open starting this week.

The event will run from April 20th – April 24th from The Heights Casino in Brooklyn, New York with 24 players bidding to add their names to the illustrious list of past champions.

No.1 seed, Elaraby, last won an event at the Pakistan International Squash Tournament Women's Challenger 10 back in 2018. But had the best tournament of her career just four months ago at the CIB Black Ball Open 2022, where she reached the semi-finals of the Platinum event.

She’ll face tough competition from many players in the draw, including two home top eight seeds, Olivia Clyne and Sabrina Sobhy. This will be No.2 seed, Clyne’s tenth appearance in the event, with her first coming in 2006. Sobhy gave a great account of herself in her last PSA World Tour bronze event as she reached the semi-finals of the Squash On Fire Open in February. She’ll be looking to recreate this form this week.

Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam is the No.6 seed for the event and comes into the event after putting up a strong performance at the Allam British Open. The World No.22 lost out in four games to the eventual runner-up and World No.1 Nouran Gohar.

Canada’s Hollie Naughton is also a top eight seed and is joined by Egyptian duo Nadine Shahin and Farida Mohamed as well as Australia’s Donna Lobban.

Eight matches will take place on day one before the top seeds enter the frame on day two. Some interesting matches include England’s Lucy Beecroft and Egypt’s Nour Aboelkheir taking on Hong Kong duo Tze Lok Ho and Ka Yi Lee. Meanwhile, another home player Marina Stefanoni will play Sana Ibrahim for a place in round two.
