Carlisle Squash Club Open QF: Arscott and Devred Join Top Two In Semis

1 July 2022

After causing an upset on the opening day of the Carlisle Squash Club 50th Anniversary Open, New Zealand’s Joel Arscott did it again in the quarter finals, and he was joined by Welshman Elliott Morris Devred in securing surprise wins to reach the semis.

The Kiwi came into the Challenger 5 level competition unseeded, and after knocking out the No.4 seed in the opening round, he backed that up with a win on Welshman Owain Taylor, the tournament’s No.6 seed, in the quarter finals to make it through to the last four.

Arscott, the World No.194, took on Taylor, who ranked 44 places above him, for a place in the semis of the event, and he started strongly, winning the first game 11-7. The Welshman then won the second on a tie-break, only for Arscott to do the same in the third. That gave the Kiwi the momentum, and he carried that through to win the fourth 11-9, and book his spot in the semis where he will now face No.2 seed Ben Smith.

The top half of the draw will see top seed Ivan Perez take on No.5 seed Elliott Morris Devred, after the Welshman took the win over Jamaican No.1 and No.3 seed Christopher Binnie. He did so in straight games, dropping just 13 points to take the win, to set up a meeting with the Spaniard in the last four.

The semi-finals of the Carlisle Squash Club 50th Anniversary Open will take place on Friday, July 1, with the final four doing battle to make it through to the finals of the competition on Saturday afternoon.
