Canadian Trio Make it Through Holtrand Open Qualifying

Matthew Serediak, Albert Shoihet and Nick Sachvie have all added to the Canadian contingent in the main draw of the Holtrand Open, PSA M10 tournament after coming through their respective final qualifying round fixtures unscathed.

Serediak, the number one qualifying seed, went head-to-head with Egypt’s Ismail Hafez in his match and shot out of the traps to take the opening game for the loss of just a single point. Hafez recovered to take the second on the tie-break but Serediak had too much for him on the day and eventually saw out an 11-1, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8 triumph to move through to his first PSA World Tour main draw of the year.

He has set up a difficult clash with title favourite Ben Coleman in the first round who will be looking to build on the runner-up finish he managed at the London Open on his last PSA World Tour appearance.

Shoihet, meanwhile, came through his encounter with Jesus Ramirez in straight games. Like Serediak, Shoihet only dropped a solitary point in the first game and went on to romp to the victory in three. He will go head-to-head with England’s Nathan Lake for a place in the quarter-final.

Sachvie took on compatriot David Baillargeon in an all-Canadian affair and, a second game wobble aside, looked in confident form throughout as he duly dispatched World No.183 Baillargeon in a 3-0 victory. Sachvie has another all-Canadian fixture to look forward to next as he comes up against second seed Shawn Delierre in the main draw’s opening round.

The only final qualifying round match not to feature a Canadian was Brian Byrne’s matchup with Cameron Stafford and the former wrapped up the victory in four to ensure that he will face experienced New Zealander Martin Knight.
