Canadian Open RD2: Beinhard, Todd and Walsh Cause Seeding Shocks

The second round of the Oxford Properties Canadian Open – Presented by AirSprint Private Aviation saw a handful of surprises, with one unseeded Canadian adding to the number of home hopes in the last eight of the competition.

In the women’s Challenger 30 level tournament, Canada’s Nikki Todd came up against Swiss No.2 Nadia Pfister, the draw’s No.5 seed, and she was able to come through in straight games, after winning a crucial first game tie-break. The Canadian took it 13-11, before going on to win in three in less than half an hour, and she will now face compatriot, and World No.21, Danielle Letourneau, in the last eight of the competition.

Todd was not the only surprise victor in the women’s event, with German No.1 Saskia Beinhard defeating Australia’s Sarah Cardwell, the No.6 seed for the tournament. After losing the first game 11-7, the German fought back to win the next three games, to advance to the quarter finals of the competition, where she will face off against Canada’s Nicole Bunyan.

The only surprise result in the men’s event came courtesy of England’s Tom Walsh, as he came from 2-1 down to win in five against No.7 seed Martin Svec. The Englishman, who recently claimed his maiden Tour title, won a marathon match, winning the fifth game 11-8 to claim the victory in 80 minutes. Also will now face No.3 seed, and Canadian No.1, David Baillargeon, in the last eight of the tournament.

The quarter finals of the Oxford Properties Canadian Open – Presented by AirSprint Private Aviation will take place on Wednesday, April 13, with all the action being streamed live on the PSA Challenger Tour YouTube channel.
