BritOpen Update: Perry Powers Past Metwally

England’s Sarah-Jane Perry moved through to the second round of the 2016 Allam British Open, PSA World Series tournament after beating 19-year-old Egyptian Mariam Metwally in straight games on home soil.

The Birmingham-born World No.13 had the better of an opening game that saw her draw Metwally in to the front of the court before holding and executing a number of thunderous straight drives.

Perry refused to let up in the second and the furious pace of her hitting seemed to take its toll on Metwally, who looked to be struggling with illness, and she closed out the game for the loss of just three points. Metwally battled wilfully in the third but her illness eventually got the better of her to hand Perry an 11-9, 11-3, 7-4 victory and the 25-year-old will now meet World No.3 Raneem El Welily in the next round.

“I’ve not played her before but I know how dangerous she is,” said Perry.

“She’s had some really good results and, even in qualifying here, she beat Samantha Teran who is a really good player so I couldn’t be complacent at all. Even though she was struggling in that last game she still played some really good shots and I had to keep my concentration.

“I think I’ve played Raneem twice and I think she’s won them both 3-1 but they’ve been reasonably close matches. I’m feeling pretty confident, I’ve made some changes to my game which seem to be working quite well. I’ve got nothing to lose and everyone will be gunning for her after she won [the Windy City Open] in Chicago.”
