Bremer Schlussel QF: Home Hope Omlor Causes Upset To Make Semis

Germany’s Yannik Omlor is one of four men through to the semi-finals of the Bremer Schlussel to keep home hopes alive at ULC Sportwelt in Bremen, after he defeated No.4 seed Balazs Farkas in the last eight of the Challenger 10 level competition.

Omlor, the No.5 seed for the tournament, and World No.100, took on the Hungarian No.1 in the quarter finals for a place in the last four, and he was quickly into a two-game lead. Farkas, who featured at the PSA World Championships for the first time earlier this year, fought back to win the third game, but Omlor was able to regroup, winning the match in four, and booking his place in the semis.

He will now face the lone unseeded player left in the draw in the Czech Republic’s Viktor Byrtus. In the second round, Byrtus had overcome top seed and defending Bremer Schlussel champion Bernat Jaume, before then taking on England’s James Peach in the quarter finals. The Czech man needed just 24 minutes to win his last eight contest, winning 11-6, 11-3, 11-9 to advance to the semi-finals.

The other semi-final on Thursday evening in Bremen will see a pair of Egyptians do battle. No.2 seed Mazen Gamal and No.3 seed Aly Abou Eleinen will meet in the last four, after they got the better of Colombia’s Andres Herrera and England’s Stuart MacGregor in their respective quarter final contests.

The semi-finals of the Bremer Schlussel will take place at the ULC Sportwelt in Bremen, Germany on Thursday, August 11, with the last four going head-to-head for places in the finals.
