Bermuda Open: Vargas & Ayman Book World Champs Spots

8 May 2022

Colombia’s Juan Camilo Vargas and Egypt’s Kenzy Ayman have become the last two players to secure their places at the 2021-2022 PSA World Championships, after the pair won their respective finals at the Bermuda Open on Saturday evening.

For the Colombian, this was a second attempt to make the World Championships, after he lost out in the final of the Val de Reuil Normandie earlier this season. After losing out in five there, Vargas had to fight to win in five at the Bermuda Squash Rackets Association, overcoming Scotland’s Rory Stewart for the victory.

After winning the first game on a tie-break 14-12, the tournament’s No.6 seed then fell behind, after Stewart won both the second and third games quite comfortably. Vargas fought for his place in Cairo, though, with an 11-9 scoreline in the fourth, before taking the final game easily, winning it 11-3 to book his spot at the sport’s premiere event.

In the women’s draw, Egypt’s Kenzy Ayman completed an incredible week, as she downed top seed Georgia Adderley in four games to secure a place at the PSA World Championships. Prior to the final, Ayman had already gotten the better of No.2 seed Nadia Pfister and No.3 seed Karina Tyma.

She lost the first game in the final, as the Scot came flying out of the blocks, but the young Egyptian was able to regroup, coming back to win the next three games to win in four, taking both the second and fourth by 11-9 scorelines, to book her spot in Cairo.
