Bermuda Open RD1: Action Underway In Final World Champs Qualifier

The Bermuda Open, the last of four qualifying tournaments for the 2021-2022 PSA World Championships, got underway at the Bermuda Squash Rackets Association on Tuesday evening, with players aiming to take the last chance to make it through to the sport’s premiere event.

The Challenger 10 level tournament kicked off yesterday, with a pair of Bermudans making it through to the second round of the women’s event on home soil. Just three women’s matches were played due to some late withdrawals, but Emma Keane and Hailey Moss will carry home hopes through to the last 16.

Both beat compatriots, with Keane overcoming Shannon Mann in straight games, while Hailey Moss had to go the distance to defeat Juliette Ferrari-McComb, withstanding comebacks from her opponent to eventually make it through the deciding game, winning in five. Moss will now take on top seed Georgia Adderley, with Keane facing No.8 seed Diana Garcia in the second round.

Just two matches in the first round of the men’s event went past three games, with Welshman Owain Taylor and Guatemala’s Ricardo Toscano both winning 3-1. The pair overcame Canada’s Liam Marrison and Maximilien Godbout, respectively, to make it through to the last 16.

The seeded players will come into the draw in the second round, with the likes of the American duo of Faraz Khan and Christopher Gordon both in action.Canadian No.1 David Baillargeon and Scotland’s Rory Stewart make up the rest of the top four seeds in the men’s draw. The action continues on Wednesday, May 4, with 16 matches taking place at the Bermuda Squash Rackets Association.
