B&T Auckland Open RD2: Amirul Gatecrashes Quarter Finals

The second round of the men’s event at the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Open saw a single shock, with Malaysia’s Amir Amirul getting the better of compatriot Wee Ming Hock to reach the quarter finals of the Challenger 5 level competition.

Amirul took on the tournament’s No.4 seed in the last 16 of the tournament, and needed just over half an hour on court to get the better of his fellow Malaysian, winning 11-7, 11-6, 11-1 to move through to the quarter finals, where he will now face No.7 seed Anthony Lepper.

Elsewhere, top seed Lwamba Chileshe had to come through a tough four-game fight to take his place in the quarter finals, as he got the better of Australia’s Benjamin Ratcliffe. The Kiwi will now take on Malaysia’s Hafiz Zhafri in the last eight.

The quarter finals of both the men’s and women’s events at the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Open will take place on the evening of Friday, May 20, with the last eight in both draws doing battle for places in the semi-finals.
