Austrian Open: Omlor Downs Wilhelmi For Victory

10 July 2021

Germany’s Yannik Omlor is the Austrian Open champion after he defeated Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi in a five-game final at Europark Salzburg.

The event was open to regional entrants, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with players from Europe being allowed to enter the Challenger 5 level tournament.

Omlor was the No.3 seed for the event, and he started his week with a win over Austria’s Mihaly Androzcky in straight games, in what was his only comfortable win of the week.

He then got the better of Spaniard Sergio Garcia Pollan in a 72-minute battle, before needing more than an hour in his semi-final clash, as he overcame top seed Juan Camilo Vargas. The German came from 2-1 down, winning the final two games to advance to the final.

In the final, he came up against Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi, and for the third straight match, it went to a deciding game. The German took the win, securing the final game 11-3, to claim his second title of 2021.
