3rd Silvester Trophy Women’s RD1: Clark Secures Surprise First Round Win

The first round of the women’s draw took place at the 3rd Silvester Trophy on Friday morning, with England’s Polly Clark securing the only surprise win, as she knocked out one of several home hopes, Alina Poessl.

The Challenger 5 level event got underway on Thursday with the men’s first round, before the women got the action started on Friday morning, and it was Clark who was the only player to knock out someone from the 9/16 seeding bracket.

She came up against Alina Poessl in the final match of the session, and needed just 18 minutes to get the job done, winning in straight games to set up an all-English clash with top seed Lily Taylor on Friday evening.

Elsewhere, fellow Englishwoman Kiera Marshall downed Stella Kaufmann in three, while the French pairing of Ella Galova and Ninon Lemarchand also made it into the last 16, with the latter coming through in five against compatriot Ana Munos.

Germany’s Aylin Gunsav, Austria’s Jacqueline Peychar and Singapore’s Au Yeong Wai Yhann were the other women to win on the opening day of the event, with all three moving into the second round, where the seeded players come into the tournament.

The action continues in Uster with the men’s second round, followed by the women’s second round, with the quarter final spots in both draws taken up by the end of the day’s play.
