3rd Silvester Trophy RD2: Seeds Falls On Second Day In Uster

19 February 2022

The second day of the 3rd Silvester Trophy took place at Squash Arena Uster on Friday, and there were plenty of surprise results in both the men’s and women’s draws at the Challenger 5 level tournament.

The men’s draw saw the biggest surprises, as four of the top eight seeds were dumped out at the second round stage, including top seed Robert Downer, with No.12 seed Joel Arscott getting the better of the Englishman in five games.

Downer won the first game 14-12, but the Kiwi fought back to take a 2-1 lead in the contest. Arscott then lost the fourth, but was able to wrestle back the momentum to win the deciding fifth game to book his spot in the quarter finals of the event.

He will now face England’s Stuart MacGregor, the No.10 seed, after he defeated No.8 seed David Zeman in straight games, winning 11-8, 12-10, 12-10 in 39 minutes, setting up a surprise quarter final clash.

In the same side of the draw, No.3 seed Robin Gadola was also knocked out of the competition, with No.9 seed Simon Herbert making his way into the last eight. The Englishman came from 2-1 down, including saving match balls in the fourth, to win it in a deciding fifth game 11-8, and he will now face Spain’s Nilo Vidal, the No.13 seed who also caused an upset by downing Dutch No.1 Roshan Bharos, in the last eight.

The bottom half of the men’s draw went to seeding, with both the Chileshe brothers, in No.2 seed Lwamba and No.4 seed Temwa, making it through, along with No.5 seed Yuri Furneti and No.6 seed Marek Panacek.

There were also a couple of seeding upsets in the women’s event, as Egypt’s Rana Ismail and Frenchwoman Ella Galova made it into the quarter finals, beating higher-ranked opposition in the second round.

Galova got the better of compatriot, and No.7 seed, Lea Barbeau in four games, while Ismail beat France’s No.8 seed Taba Taghavi in straight games. The Egyptian will face top seed Lily Taylor in the last eight, while Galova will do battle with No.3 seed Lucy Beecroft.

The quarter finals of the 3rd Silvester Trophy will take place on Saturday, February 19, with all eight matches taking place at Squash Arena Uster in Switzerland.
