3rd Guatemala Squash Open: Two In Two Weeks For Cardenas

20 December 2021

Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas has added to his already impressive of titles in 2021 with a second victory in two weeks on the Challenger Tour, winning the 3rd Guatemala Open Squash Tournament.

The Challenger 10 level tournament was being run with regional restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with only those currently based in the Americas being permitted to enter, and Cardenas came in as the top seed.

After winning the 2nd Guatemala Open Squash Tournament last Sunday, he started this week’s campaign in the second round following a bye through the opening day’s play. He then beat Canadian Salah Eltorgman in straight games to kick off his tournament.

The Mexican then got the better of Pakistan’s Ahsan Ayaz and Colombia’s Ronald Palomino in the next two round to make it through to the final without dropping a game, showing his dominance.

That run continued in the final, as he faced compatriot Alfredo Avila for the second week in succession for the title. Cardenas won 3-0 to secure his fourth title of the year, and the 12th of his career already.
