2nd Squash Inn Classic RD1: Trio Of Seeds Out On Opening Day

The opening day of the 2nd Squash Inn Classic – Sponsored by Faltami saw some surprises, with three unseeded players making it through to the quarter finals of the Challenger 3 level competition.

The biggest of those surprises at the Squash Inn Club saw Mexico’s Leo Vargas overcome the challenge of No.2 seed, and compatriot, Miled Zarazua, in straight games. The first two games both went to tie-breaks, before Vargas claimed the third with ease, to advance to the last eight of the tournament.

Also in the bottom half top the draw, another Mexican in Juan Carlos Gomez downed Colombia’s No.6 seed Andres Villamizar to make his way through to the quarter finals. After losing the first, Gomez won the next two games comfortably, before seeing the Colombian force the match into a decider. However, the World No.401 was able to take the fifth to secure victory, making his way through.

The other surprise result came in the top half of the draw, where Mexico’s Bryan Cueto downed No.5 seed Karim Elbarbary. The Egyptian won the first game 14-12, but from there, he could only take another 11 points, as Cueto put his stamp on the contest to win in four games, setting up a clash with top seed Alejandro Reyes in the quarters.

The quarter finals of the 2nd Squash Inn Classic – Sponsored by Faltami will take place on Friday, May 27, with the Squash Inn Club in Mexico City continuing to play host to the Challenger 3 level tournament.
