Robert Downer is one of the most experienced players on Tour, having been a member since 2009, but he had to wait until 2021 for his first title, and to break into the top 100 in the World Rankings.

In his first event on Tour, the Meersquashheroes Open, he reached the final, but he would have to wait nine years before making it to another.

He reached the semi-finals of the Aramex Squash Open a year later, along with the same stage of the British Virgin Islands Open Squash Championships in 2012. Plenty of other events saw Downer make it into the quarter finals as well, including at the Phoenix Open in 2013.

The Englishman made another semi-final at the Gibraltar Open a year later before doing so at the Open International d’Angers and the 3rd Open Squash Provence Chateau-Arnoux in 2015. The Mano Arbeitnehmeruberlassung Insel Bruggen Open and Otters International JSW ISC the next year also saw Downer make the last four.

He had to wait until 2019 before he got another crack in a final, as he made it all the way at the Hampshire Open, but he lost out to Portugal’s Rui Soares. He also made the quarter finals of the Garavan’s West of Ireland Open, Romanian Open and Aston and Fincher Sutton Coldfield International that year as well.

Once the Tour returned ini the latter part of 2020 after its enforced suspension due to COVID-19, Downer reached the semis of both the Hampshire Open and the Swiss Open, before also making it to the last four of the Expression Networks Enjoy Open, his first outing of 2021.

After twelve years of trying, the Englishman finally got his hands on silverware, as he won the Czech Pro Series 2, beating home favourite Martin Svec in the final to claim his maiden Tour title. That win helped push him inside the top 100 for the first time in hi career in May of that year.

A second victory soon followed, as Downer also claimed the Schraglage Squash Open crown, before then making it to a string of quarter finals in the latter half of the year, at the Madeira International, Open International Niort Venise Verte and the Czech Open. He broke into the top 80 in the World Rankings at the start of 2022.
