Patrick Rooney is one of the leading Englishmen on the Tour, and he broke into the world's top 20 for the first time in 2022.

Rooney first featured on Tour in 2014, and made the semi-finals of just his fourth tournament, doing so at the Christchurch Vets Ipswich Open. He also reached the last four at the Sutton Coldfield International that year, before reaching the same stage in Ipswich for a second year running.

In 2016, just a week before his 19th birthday, Rooney secured his first victory on Tour, winning the Madeira International Squash Tournament. That was part of a 16-tournament run where he reached at least the quarter-finals at every event.

His consistency carried through to 2017, where he broke into the top 100 in the World Rankings for the first time. He finished runner-up at the Rhiwbina PSA Welsh Men’s Open that year, before also taking a runners-up finish at the Annecy PSA Open in 2018.

After reaching the semi-finals of the Welsh Open, he then took his second victory on Tour, lifting the Vitesse Stratford Classic title after defeating fellow Englishman Charlie Lee in the final. Another runners-up finish came at the Springfield Scottish Squash Open the year after, before he notched back-to-back wins.

After reaching the second round of a Platinum level event for the first time in his career, doing so at the Allam British Open in 2019, Rooney then tasted success on the island of Madeira for the second time in his career. A month later, he came back to England and won the Arnold Homes Tring Open. He then finished runner-up at the London Open in his final appearance of the year.

Thanks to his performances in 2020, Rooney reached a career-high of World No.52, and that would improve with some great results the following year. He made it through to the last 16 of a Platinum level tournament for the first time, doing so at the El Gouna International, before also achieving the same mark at the U.S. Open presented by Truist later in the year.

After making it to the semis of the Cleveland Skating Club Open on the Challenger Tour, Rooney then reached another Platinum third round, this time at the Qatar QTerminals Classic, and thanks to that result, along with a quarter final appearance at the London Open, the Englishman started 2022 inside the top 30 in the World Rankings.

Thanks to some solid results, including making it into the last 16 of both the GillenMarkets Canary Wharf Classic and the Allam British Open, Rooney broke into the world’s top 20 for the first time in May 2022.

He then made the semis of the Manchester Open, and the last eight of the Cannon Kirk Irish Squash Open, before being a key member of the English group that won the European Team Championships in the summer. The good form continued, with his best result in the early half of the new campaign seeing Rooney make the last eight of the Malaysian Open Squash Championships.

He also made the last 16 of the Everbright Securities International Hong Kong Squash Open, before reaching the same stage of the Pittsburgh Open and the GillenMarkets Canary Wharf Classic. Rooney also made the quarter finals at the Manchester Open at the back end of the season.
