Nicolas Mueller is the only Swiss player to have broken into the top 20 in the world rankings, achieving the feat in 2012.

Since joining the PSA in 2005, Mueller has gone on to establish himself as Switzerland’s greatest player. He won his first PSA World Tour title at the Russian Opportunities Fund Championships in 2008.

2011 was a good year for Mueller and the Swiss star had a number of high finishes in high-profile events, including a semi-final place at the Rocky Mountain Open in March and a quarter-final finish at a PSA World Series event, the Qatar Classic, which saw him awarded with the 2011 PSA Young Player of the Year.

April 2013 saw him win his seventh successive Swiss National Championship title to reaffirm his status as Switzerland’s greatest player. Mueller captured his first PSA World Tour title in over four years in February 2014 when he defeated local-hero Olli Tuominen at the Finnish Open with a superb 3-1 victory.

He had an inauspicious start to 2015 as he struggled to make it past the first round in the majority of events that he appeared at. A semi-final finish at the Edmonton Open towards the end of the year however was a reminder of Mueller’s ability. He reached the semi-final of the IG Open De Paris in 2016, before also reaching the semi-final stage of the CCI International JSW ISC but Mueller was knocked out of the tournament by Mohamed Abouelghar over three games.

Muller then lost in the final of the Open International de Squash de Nantes to another home favourite, Gregoire Marche. The Swiss player was able to secure a title in 2017, taking home the Charlottesville Open trophy.

He went on to reach the final of the CCI International the year after, and the Vedanta Indian Squash Open in 2018, but lost out to home favourite Saurav Ghosal on both occasions. The Swiss No.1 reached the last 16 of the China Open, CCI International and the Motor City Open before making the last four of the Three Rivers Capital Pittsburgh Open.

Mueller made the last 16 of the Platinum level El Gouna International, before then reaching the final of the Malaysian Open, where he lost out to home favourite Eain Yow Ng. A run of last 32 appearances at the major tournaments followed, including the CIB Egyptian Squash Open and the PSA Men’s World Championship 2019-2020.

He then made the last 16 of the Manchester Open and the CIB Egyptian Open as squash returned following its six-month hiatus in 2020, before reaching back-to-back finals on the Challenger Tour. He won the Liechtenstein Open, before losing out to countryman Dimitri Steinmann in the final of the Sihltal Classic.

Mueller was consistent throughout 2021, making it to the last 32 of seven successive events, including the PSA World Championships, Allam British Open and the U.S. Open presented by Truist. He also won the Challenger 20 level Czech Open, before making it to the quarter finals of the Malaysian Open Squash Championships. The Swiss No.1 started 2022 with a last 16 appearance at the Houston Open.

He then had an incredible run on British soil in the early part of the year, starting with a first Gold level semi-final appearance, beating Gregoire Marche and Marwan ElShorbagy en route to the last four at the Optasia Championships. He then beat the Egyptian again on his way to the quarters at the GillenMarkets Canary Wharf Classic, before also making it to the last eight at the Platinum level Allam British Open. Those performances saw him move to a career-high of World No.14.

Mueller became European Individual Champion in the summer, and continued his form into the new PSA World Tour season. The Swiss No.1 made the quarters of the Grasshopper Cup on home soil, before defending his Czech Open title, and moving up a further place in the World Rankings. He also made the semis of the Malaysian Open Squash Championships before the year came to a conclusion.

The ‘Swiss Rocket’ started 2023 with last 16 results at both the Houston Open and the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions. That was followed with a quarter final appearance at the Oxford Properties Canadian Men’s Open, with another last eight result coming at the Manchester Open towards the end of the campaign.
