One of the most exciting and energetic players on the PSA World Tour, Miguel Angel Rodriguez is a real fan favourite and has the distinction of being the first South American to win a major title on Tour, and to make the top five in the world rankings.

‘The Colombian Cannonball’ has particularly excelled in his home country, winning the Colombian Open on three occasions in 2008, 2010 and 2014 and finishing runner up in the competition in 2006 and again six years later in 2012.

In September 2013, Rodriguez became the highest-ranked South American of all time, exceeding Fernando Usandizaga in a year that also saw him emerge victorious at the Bluenose Classic and achieve a bronze medal finish at the World Games in Cali. 2014 was a successful year for the Colombian. After an impressive semi-final finish at the Canary Wharf Open, he captured the Rancho Open title along with the Colombian Open in August.

The diminutive star broke into the top ten world rankings in January 2015 and made history again that month when he became the first ever South American to reach the semi-finals of a PSA World Series event at the Tournament of Champions before winning the biggest title of his career to date, the 2015 Motor City Open, just one week later. Rodriguez became a real crowd-favourite during the 2014/15 season and he was rewarded for his stunning form by breaching the world's top five for the first time.

His form took a bit of a dip during the opening stages of the 2015/16 campaign but he did become the first ever South American to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship in November 2015. Semi-Final finishes at the Windy City Open and El Gouna International towards the end of 2015/16 helped Rodriguez qualify for the season-ending PSA Dubai World Series Finals, where he lost out in the last four to Gregory Gaultier.

The early months of the 2016/17 season were disastrous for Rodriguez as he fell to first round defeats in his first four tournaments, before a third round finish at the 2016 PSA Men’s World Championship halted his run of straight losses. The Colombian began January 2017 ranked at No.14 in the World Rankings - nine places lower than he began the previous year.

He reached the quarter finals of the Motor City Open and the Houston Open, before making it to the last four at the Torneo International Sporta. Rodriguez also made the quarter finals of the World Championship in 2017, where he was ousted by Ali Farag. He then also lost to Mr Fantastic at the Tournament of Champions. He made the semis of the Motor City in 2018, before making history at the British Open. He became the first man from South America to win a major PSA tour title.

Rodriguez followed it up with victory at the Torneo International Sporta, as he made it into the World Series Finals. He made three quarter final appearances in the early part of the 2018/19 campaign. He continued his quarter final run in the Motor City Open, and followed it up with last eight appearances at the World Championships, Grasshopper Cup and the DPD Open. He also reached the quarter finals of the British Open, as he attempted to defend his title, before winning the Torneo Internacional Sporta for the second straight year, as he beat Diego Elias in the final.

The ‘Colombian Cannonball’ reached the semi-finals of the Oracle NetSuite Open in his first outing of the 2019-2020 season, before making it through to the last eight of the first Platinum tournament of the campaign, the FS Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships. He also reached the quarter-finals of the Motor City Open in the truncated season.

After a few early exits following the return of the PSA World Tour, Rodriguez finished 2020 with a quarter-final appearance at the CIB Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo.

Rodriguez reignited his love affair with the British Open in 2021, making it through to the semi-finals in another incredible run, only to be stopped by World No.1 Ali Farag. He also made it to the last eight of the Canary Wharf Classic, along with finishing runner-up at the Malaysian Open Squash Championships. The ‘Colombian Cannonball’ started 2022 with a quarter-final appearance at the Houston Open.

He continued his love affair with the city of Hull, reaching the quarter finals of the Allam British Open yet again, in his best result of the back half of the 2021-2022 campaign. Rodriguez also made it to the last eight of the Gold level J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York City.

The Colombian started the 2022-2023 season in the same vein of form, making it to the quarter finals of both the QTerminals Qatar Classic and the Oracle NetSuite Open. He took his 30th Tour title at the City Tattersalls Club Australian Open later in the year, before ending the campaign with a last eight result at the Malaysian Open Squash Championships.

Rodriguez started 2023 with an incredible run to the semi-finals of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions. He then made the quarter finals of the both the Sturbridge Capital Motor City Open and Pittsburgh Open, before then going through to the semis of the Oxford Properties Canadian Men’s Open.
