Joelle King is the leading New Zealander on the PSA World Tour and has done well to come back from a serious Achilles injury sustained in 2014.

She won her first Tour title in 2008 at the North Island Championships and followed that up with three further titles a year later. 2010 was a fine year for King who won the prestigious Texas Open and claimed gold and silver medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

She was elevated into the world's top 10 for the first time in 2011 and moved into the top five while also claiming the Macau Open in 2012. A quiet year followed but she made a winning start to 2014 as she captured the Greenwich Open in January 2014 after a hard-fought victory over Low Wee Wern.

A ruptured achilles tendon saw her fall outside the world’s top 50 - but she made her return to the Tour after a year out in 2015's British Open where she lost out to Laura Massaro in the quarter-final. She won the Australian Open three months later and followed that up by reaching the final of the Carol Weymuller Open in October 2015, eventually breaking back into the world’s top 10 in April 2016.

King rounded off the 2015/16 season by downing Joshna Chinappa to win the HKFC International and started the 2016/17 campaign in strong fashion after lifting the Macau Open crown in September 2016. King backed this up with semi-final appearances at the Netsuite Open, where she was beaten by Laura Massaro and at the Texas Open where she came up short against Australian Donna Urquhart.

Her next last four appearance was not until August 2017, where she made the semis of the China Open before missing out on the title in the Macau Open, defeated in the final by Nouran Gohar. The pattern continued once more, as a semi final appearance at the US Open was followed by defeat in the final of the Carol Weymuller Open, this time to Nour El Sherbini. The Kiwi started 2018 well, with victory at the Cleveland Classic and finishing runner-up at the Windy City Open. King returned to the World No.4 spot in April 2018, and ended the month with two Gold Medals at the Commonwealth Games, with victories in the singles and women’s doubles.

King then secured a 7th New Zealand Nationals title in June, before finishing runner-up at the Bellevue International, her first tournament of the 2018/19 season. The Kiwi won the Hong Kong Open, defeating Raneem El Welily in the final, to end the calendar year on a high before reaching a career-high of World No.3 in February 2019.

The Kiwi reached the semi finals of the Tournament of Champions and the CIB Black Ball Open, as well as last eight appearances at the PSA World Championships, El Gouna International and British Open. She won the inaugural Manchester Open in May.

King reached the quarter-finals of her first two tournaments in 2019-2020, at the J.P. Morgan China Squash Open and the Oracle NetSuite Open in San Francisco. She also reached the last eight at the Women’s World Championships before making it through to the last four of three consecutive tournaments on U.S. soil, the Tournament of Champions the Carol Weymuller Open and the Cleveland Classic.

The defending Manchester Open was unable to retain her crown as the PSA World Tour returned following its six-month suspension due to COVID-19, as the Kiwi lost out to Camille Serme in the quarter-finals at the National Squash Centre.

She then made it through to the semi-finals of the CIB PSA World Tour Finals in Cairo, despite being the lowest seed in the women’s draw. The Kiwi also made it to the last four of the year-ending CIB Black Ball Squash Open, but lost out to eventual champion Sarah-Jane Perry in the semi-finals.

The New Zealander also followed with a semi-final appearance at the first event of 2021, the CIB PSA Black Ball Squash Open, and also made it into the last four of the Oracle NetSuite Open that year, along with several other quarter final results at major tournaments.

King finished runner-up at the Squash on Fire Open in her first appearance of 2022, before making a string of semi-final appearances, making it to the last four of the Windy City Open Presented by the Walter Family, CIB Black Ball Open and the Allam British Open. She then won the Manchester Open, her biggest title of the season.

The Kiwi added to her already incredible tally of Commonwealth Games medals in the summer of 2022, as she won the Gold Medal in both the Women's Doubles and the Mixed Doubles. King now has eight Commonwealth Games medals, with five Golds amongst them.

King brought 2022 to a close in sublime form, making at least the semis of her last five events. She made the last four of the Oracle NetSuite Open, U.S. Open and Everbright Securities International Hong Kong Squash Open, whilst also claiming two titles.

She was a part of the New Zealand team (with Paul Coll) who finished runners-up at the Nations Cup, before she then claimed the New Zealand Open crown on home soil. That was followed by a victory at the MARIGOLD Singapore Squash Open just seven days later, her 16th Tour title, and her biggest in four years.

King made the semis of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, Black Ball Squash Open and British Open, before making it to the last four of the PSA World Championships for the first time in her career. Those results in the early part of 2023 consolidated her place as the leading non-Egyptian in the women’s World Rankings.
