Borja Golan has fought through a serious knee injury, sustained in 2009, to emerge as Spain’s greatest ever squash player. He continues to delight the fans despite having turned 40.

The injury was sustained in the Columbian Open final, which he went on to lose to David Palmer. Despite this, the Spaniard climbed into the top 10 the month after the tournament had come to a close.

He would have to wait until 2013 before he could rank as highly again when he reached the semi-final of the Qatar Classic that year. In December 2013 he finished runner up to Nick Matthew in the Hong Kong Open which was the Spaniard’s first PSA World Series final.

Golan couldn’t manage a PSA World Tour title in 2014 but made it to several semi-finals, with his performance at the Hong Kong Open in August a particular highlight. He started 2015 slowly with his quarter-final finish at the Tournament of Champions being followed up with two more identical finishes at the Motor City Open and Canary Wharf Classic.

He ended a two year wait for a 30th PSA World Tour title by lifting the CCI International in September of that year. Golan spent a fourth straight calendar year in the world’s top 20 in 2016 and also triumphed at the Sporta Internacional tournament in May of that year.

The Spaniard went on to feature in the semi-finals of the China Squash Open, where he lost out to Mohamed ElShorbagy and the semi-finals of the Windy City Open, where he fell short against France's Gregory Gaultier.

He also reached the semis of the Canary Wharf Classic, where he was beaten by Fares Dessouky. A quarter final appearance at the Pacific Market International Bellevue Squash Classic also followed. Golan’s next tour victory came at the Montreal Open, where he overcame Nafiizwan Adnan in the final. The Spaniard then reached the quarters of the Macau Open, but was ousted by Tsz Fung Yip.

The Spaniard failed to make the last eight of any tournament over the course of the 2018-2019 season, but had good showings in the last 16 of the Qatar Classic, World Championships, Canary Wharf Classic and the Grasshopper Cup.

He made the last 16 of the Open de France - Nantes presented by Tailor Capital and Troilus Gold Canada Cup, but his best result in the 2019-2020 season saw him reach the quarter-finals of the Windy City Open presented by the Walter Family, his first appearance in the last eight of a major tournament since 2017.

During the 2019-2020 season, Golan also represented Spain at the WSF World Men’s Team Squash Championships in Washington, D.C. The Spanish quartet finished the week-long event in 8th, their best ever finish at the world’s premiere team tournament.

Following the Tour’s restart after its enforced six-month suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Golan reached the third round of the Qatar Classic, and also made several other second round appearances in the majors throughout 2021, including at the Allam British Open.

In 2022, Golan reached the last 16 of both the Sturbridge Capital Motor City Open and the El Gouna International, and at the end of the year, he secured his 33rd PSA Tour title. The Spaniard was victorious at the Open International Niort Venise Verte, beating Frenchman Auguste Dussourd in the final.
