Worlds Update: Meguid Moves Past Tuominen

15 November 2015

Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid secured his place in the second round of the 2015 Men’s World Squash Championship after an impressive straight-games win over experienced Finnish campaigner Olli Tuominen.

Meguid stormed out of the block, mixing his impeccable length hitting with variation in his drop, to take the first game in double-quick time to get an early advantage on the scoreboard. He doubled his lead after winning a tie-break at the end of what was a scrappy and gritty second game, with both players struggling to clear interference in the middle of the court, ensuring the referees were kept busy.

The third began in the much the same fashion but it was the powerful Egyptian, who is also a qualified dentist, who held firm to string together a decent run of points from 5-5 to 10-5 and despite wasting a few match ball opportunities, he managed to see out the match and move into the second round for just the second time in his career.

“At the start, I wanted to play long rallies to try and tire him, but all my length just went in and I didn’t make any unforced errors in the first game, so it was over pretty quickly,” said Meguid.

“I had a couple of bad results lately, so I’m just happy to come through today.”

Result:
Omar Abdel Meguid (EGY) bt Olli Tuominen (FIN) 3-0: 11-3, 13-11, 11-8 (29m)
