Windsor Cup: Elnawasany Upset Sets Up All-Egyptian Final Four In Canada

The semi-finalists have been decided at the Windsor Cup in Canada as Yahya Elnawasany scored another upset to guarantee and Egyptian winner as he joins the other top three seeds Tarek Momen, Youssef Soliman and Mohamed ElSherbini in the final four.

Elnawasany was up against France’s Gregoiore Marche for a spot in the semi-finals. The pair had never met before on the PSA World Tour but the Egyptian was full of confidence after his round two upset over Abdulla Al Tamimi and took that into his quarter final clash. He produced amazing squash to take a 2-0 lead winning both the opening games 11-8 and place one foot in the semi-finals.

Marche battled back however and used his experience to restrict the opportunities of his opponent which forced Elnawasany to take on shots that weren’t on. The third game entered a tiebreak with Marche squandering three game balls before having to save a match ball at 13-12. The Frenchman then took the next three points to win 15-13 and breathe more life in the contest. The No.4 seed ran out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth game and it wasn’t long before Marche forced a fifth and final game. The Egyptian regrouped strongly to run out to a 7-3 lead and never looked back as he stormed to victory to upset the seedings yet again.

Elnawasany will be up against No.2 seed Youssef Soliman in the bottom half semi-final after he defeated surprise quarter finalist Andrew Douglas in 32 minutes. After an 11-6 start for Soliman, he then restricted Douglas to just five more points in the contest to storm his way into the final four.

The top half semi-final will be contested between top seed Tarek Momen and No.3 seed Mohamed ElSherbini. Momen overcame compatriot Omar Mosaad in his quarter final. After setting up a 2-0 lead by winning both opening games 11-5, Momen secured his place in the semis, winning 11-8 in the third game. ElSherbini was impressive in his victory over Scotland’s Greg Lobban. ElSherbini was accurate and methodical in his play and moved the ball around the court in great style, finding winners from all areas of the court. After setting himself up with a 2-0 lead, the Egyptian secured the win in four games to take his spot in the semi-finals.
