Wimbledon: Home Hopes Through on Day One

English trio Chris Simpson, Ben Coleman and George Parker all progressed on day one of the Wimbledon Club Squash Squared Open PSA World Tour Bronze event.

World No.40 Simpson was in dominant form to dispatch experienced Fin Olli Tuominen by an 11-7, 11-4, 16-14 scoreline and book his place in the second round where he will face England’s former World No.1 James Willstrop.

Simpson, will be joined in the second round by compatriot Coleman following his battle with Spain’s Carlos Cornes Ribadas in round one.

The Englishman prevailed in a 59-minute battle with the Spaniard to advance by an 11-6, 11-2, 11-1 scoreline. He will now face number eight seed Lucas Serme for a place in the quarter-finals.

World No.38 Parker completed a good day for the home contingent after he came from a game down against compatriot Patrick Rooney in 66 minutes. Parker will now take on fellow Englishman Daryl Selby in the second round.

Elsewhere, Egyptians Fares Dessouky and Mostafa Asal both secured second round berths courtesy of respective victories over Pakistan’s Asim Khan and English wildcard Jordan Warne. Dessouky will now face top seed Marwan ElShorbagy, while Asal will take on England’s Tom Richards.

There were also wins for India’s Maesh Magaonkar, Spain’s Iker Pajares Bernabeu and France’s Baptiste Masotti on day one.

The event is a significant fundraiser for Squash Squared, which is a UK registered squash and education charity supporting disadvantaged students for academic and sporting success. Tickets can be purchased via the tournament website and prices start from £20 for adults and £10 for juniors.
