Weekend RoundUp: Malhotra Claims Aspin Kemp & Associates Aspin Cup

India’s World No.84 Vikram Malhotra claimed his seventh PSA title after he defeated Egypt’s rising star Mostafa Asal 3-1 in the final of the Aspin Kemp & Associates Aspin Cup over the weekend.

28-year-old Malhotra was the number four seed at the tournament and toppled number two seed Alfredo Avila in the semi-finals to set up a final showdown with 17-year-old World Junior champion Asal.

The Indian took the first game comfortably before the three following games went the distance with one delayed for 15 minutes after a collision at the front of the court which saw the Egyptian teenager suffer a slight injury to his ankle. However, he returned to take a game off Malhotra, but the Indian’s movement and consistency proved to be too much as he took an 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 victory in 75 minutes.

Meanwhile at the Wakefield PSA tournament, Colombia’s World No.114 Juan Camilo Vargas took his second PSA title after he defeated Pakistan’s World No.120 Shahjahan Khan in the final.

Vargas – who defeated top seed Christopher Binnie in the semi-finals – took a 2-1 lead before Khan roared back in an entertaining final which saw the match go the distance as Vargas claimed an 8-11, 11-5, 14-12, 9-11, 11-9 victory.
